I am often being asked by readers and audiences, “What can I do?” Below are the areas in which I take the approach of “Make things happen.” You can join me in any number of these. —Talia Carner
THE THIRD DAUGHTER, JERUSALEM MAIDEN, HOTEL MOSCOW and THE THIRD DAUGHTER—The plight of women around the globe
- In my book tour, I speak about the plight of women around the globe, and am often asked by audience members how they can help. Here is a great source list of ways to get involved: List of Resources. (Also, check out women’s advocacy groups from Cities for CEDAW and anti-children trafficking, EPCAT as well as Jewish women’s advocacy, such as Hadassah and National Council of Jewish Women.)
- In September 2019, upon the release of THE THIRD DAUGHTER, I announced my initiative to fight human slavery and sex trafficking. Please see my page dedicated to anti sex-trafficking resources for readers to get involved and take action.
CHINA DOLL—Infanticide and gendercide in China
- I respond to blogs, news, and write my own articles, such as “Baby Supermarket.” You can help by similarly respond to blogs and media news. Better yet, show interest by requesting your media to investigate and write updates on the issue. (The 2008 Olympics in Beijing was a chance to break the silence on the “missing” 1.7 million girls each, but none of the thousands of reporters and journalists to whom I appealed was interested. Wouldn’t you, their audience, want to know?)
- My hard-facts PowerPoint presentation, “Gendercide in China,” at the February-March 2007 U.N. Conference on the Status of Women is accessible online.
PUPPET CHILD—The scandal in our own backyard is the courts’ abuse of molested children
- I helped launch The Protective Parent Reform Act, which has already passed in a couple of states and is in front of the legislature in many others. Use the PowerPoint presentation I offer for free, and take it to activists, civic and political groups—and, more importantly, to your state legislators and congressional representatives.
- My new project is JAW—Judges Against Mothers—which will quantify bias and discrimination against women in court. Any academic connection you may have—with students, professors, department heads and administrators—in areas of social work, law, journalism, statistics or women’s studies will be helpful.
- Other projects you can tackle: Form or join a court watch group in your area—the most effective way to signal to judges that there are witnesses to their behavior. Or offer protective mothers to accompany them on court hearings as they are often physically alone.

Writing
- Join the The International Women’s Writing Guild.
- Start your writing group. If you don’t know how, ask me. My first writing group in Long Island, started 20 years ago was a source of joy, friendship, support, and professional development. Then, after moving to New York city, I participated in a weekly writing group that anchored me into routine, challenged me, gave me constructive feedback and pulled me out of the literary life’s isolation.
- Write about what you don’t know. Research it, feel it from the inside, and let your imagination soar.
